Camilo José Cela The writer Camilo José Cela was born in La Coruña, Spain in 1916. His vast body of literary work was characterized by his rich, skillful handling of language, a deep capacity for observing the real world and a gentle sympathy for his characters. Many of them, like young Raúl, the title character of his story Las orejas del niño Raúl are poor, weak or put down by others. Camilo José Cela had a special feeling for stories that are about things that are important to ordinary people and feature traditional local customs. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990. Camilo José Cela died in Madrid on January 17, 2002.
